CROMWELL, Conn., June 26, 2011- Leading by a stroke going into the final round of the 2011 Travelers Championship, Sweden’s Fredrik Jacobson held on by that margin and shot a 66 to earn his first career PGA TOUR victory at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn.
“Obviously, it means a great deal,” Jacobson said. “I came over in ’03 after having won in Europe, and I had my eyes on the (PGA) TOUR. Obviously after winning a couple of times that year (on European Tour), I felt pretty good about winning, and I didn’t know it was going to take this long before I won one. But whoever waits for a long time, all the sweeter when it comes together.”
Jacobson moved into first place when he shot a 63 Saturday. He fired a three-under on the front nine Sunday to retain the lead and held on with a back nine 34.
Jacobson was tied with Ryan Moore after 17 holes on Sunday at 20-under par. Moore bogeyed the 72nd hole to finish at 19-under. Needing a par for the win, Jacobson calmly hit his drive in the fairway on 18 and stuck his approach to 13 feet. He two putted for the win. Moore and John Rollins finished at 19-under and tied for second place.
Jacobson was steady the entire tournament, as evidenced by just one bogey over four rounds. His total score of 260 is the third best in tournament history, just two strokes off Kenny Perry’s 72-hole tournament record of 258 in 2009.
This was Jacobson’s fourth appearance at the Travelers Championship, his previous best finish coming in 2006, when he tied for 48th. Overall, this is his fourth title, with the other three wins coming on the European Tour in 2003.
Jacobson became the fourth first-time PGA TOUR winner at the Travelers Championship in the last six years, joining J.J.Henry in 2006, Hunter Mahan in 2007 and Bubba Watson in 2010. The 2012 Travelers Championship will take place June 18-24 at TPC River Highlands. For more information, please visit www.TravelersChampionship.com.
In yet another example of her incredible talent and no-fear mentality, Adams Golf Tour Staff Member Yani Tseng won the Wegmans LPGA Championship by 10 strokes at 19-under-par. With the win, Tseng became the youngest player (22) to win four majors. She also matched the LPGA Tour record-low at a major and has won three of the tour’s last six majors. The only major she’s missing is the U.S. Women’s Open title, which she’ll have an opportunity to complete her career grand slam in two weeks at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Here’s what the world’s No. 1 player carried in her bag:
Speedline 9032LS driver – 9.5 deg.
Speedline FW – 14 deg. (3)
Idea a7 hybrid – 19 deg.
Idea a7 hybrid – 22 deg.
Idea Tech a4 irons (4-PW)
Mick Elliot from espn.com has a great story about Yani and how she arrived on the global stage of women’s golf:
When Tseng flipped on her television Saturday night before going to sleep on her 54-hole lead, she tuned in the Golf Channel to watch and self-critique. But it was not to study her golf. It was to listen to herself being interviewed and judge her communication efforts.
“I probably talk too much now,” she said with a giggle last week. “I try don’t be afraid to talk to people, the media, fans or friends. You know, just try to be free. That’s how I learn English so fast. I learn lots of American slang and from the book.”
It really doesn’t matter. Her statement Sunday was heard loud and clear.
The summer has heated up fast for the Adams Golf Tour Staff with 3 wins in the span of 1 week. Tom Watson started by winning the Senior PGA Championship on the first hole of a playoff. Steve Wheatcroft ran away with the Nationwide Tour’s Melwood Prince George’s County Open, finishing a staggering 29-under Sunday for a record-breaking 12-stroke victory. And Brittany Lincicome shot a 5-under-par 66 on Sunday to record her fourth career LPGA victory at the ShopRite LPGA Classic.
This magical week on Tour comes approximately 3 months after the Adams Golf Tour staff swept the weekend of Feb. 20 with wins on the PGA Tour (Aaron Baddeley – Northern Trust Open), the Champions Tour (Bernhard Langer – ACE Group Classic) and the LPGA Tour (Yani Tseng – Honday LPGA Thailand).
