After a difficult 2017 that took his focus away from golf, Jason Day rededicated himself to his game this year and the results have been quick and impressive. His victory at Quail Hollow, where he had a chance to win the PGA Championship last August, was his second of the year, following his playoff win against Alex Norén and Ryan Palmer at the Farmers Insurance Open in January.

On a difficult course with firm greens and some nerve-testing pin positions, Day shook off consecutive bogeys twice in the final round to pick up his 12th PGA Tour victory.

The numbers spell out why Day won: He was second in the field in sand saves, getting up and down 15 out of 16 times. The Tour leader in strokes gained-putting, he showed why at Quail Hollow, ranking second in strokes gained on the greens. He looked strikingly similar to the Jason Day who ranked No. 1 in the world for 56 weeks.

Day wasn’t perfect on Sunday but it was hard for anyone to generate much positive momentum on the warm, breezy afternoon. Both times Day made back-to-back bogeys – at the fifth and sixth holes and at the 13th and 14th holes – he quickly rebounded with consecutive birdies.

While the trophy belonged to Day, it was a huge week for Wise and Watney. It was the best finish of the 21-year-old Wise’s blossoming career. He hadn’t finished inside the top 30 in his past seven starts (with three missed cuts) but he was tied for the lead with three holes remaining.

For Watney, it was his best finish since the 2015 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Back issues essentially sidelined Watney for a year, and this year he has begun to find his pre-injury form.
