Brice Garnett, a 34-year-old journeyman who won twice on the Web.com Tour last year, made 23 birdies and one eagle to obliterate the field on the way to his first PGA Tour victory. Through 48 holes, he already had reached 19-under par and simply overwhelmed the competition.
“I got a text from a buddy last night saying that nobody else in this field has won twice in the past year, so go on out and get yourself another one,” and emotional Garnett said after the final round. “It was a hard day, but this is a lot of fun to do this.”
Nobody had a legitimate shot to challenge Garnett during a rainy, windswept final round. He led the field in the main putting stats for the week, needing just more than 1.5 putts per green in regulation.
After winning, Garnett reflected on what the victory means for his career. He had notched only four top-10 finishes in his 87 Tour starts, but this performance vaults him to 38th in the FedEx Cup points standings and ensures Tour membership for the next two full seasons.
“It’s crazy,” Garnett said. “It’s been a lot of hard work, a lot of determination and a lot of support along the way.”
Canadian rookie Corey Connors, the 54-hole leader at the recent Valspar Championship before fading in the final round, had a similar experience in Punta Cana. Playing in the final group Sunday, Connors shot 76 and plummeted to a tie for 13th. Still, it is the best result of his career.
The tournament proved to be critical for many young players hoping to solidify their positions on Tour.
Keith Mitchell shot 5-under 67 in the final round, making birdie on the 72nd hole to finish alone in second place. The 26-year-old rookie out of the University of Georgia now is within the top 100 of the FedEx Cup standings. Denny McCarthy, another rookie, finished a career-best solo fourth.
