Though the new PGA Tour season is only 10 events old, Patton Kizzire already has made a significant impact, winning twice to establish himself as a new force.

Titleist 917 D3Kizzire, 31, won the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in November and picked up his second trophy by outlasting James Hahn in a grinding playoff that ended shortly before sunset in Hawaii.

“It wasn’t necessarily pretty but it was nice to come out on top,” Kizzire said. “It was kind of a marathon playoff.”

Hahn didn’t figure to be part of the final-round storyline, starting Sunday seven strokes out of the lead. But he went on a torrid run midway through his closing round, making seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch to bounce up the leaderboard. Hahn shot a final-round 62 and it turned out to be enough to get into the playoff.

Titleist 917F2That’s because 28-year-old Tom Hoge, who led the lead much of Sunday, turned a one-stroke lead into a one-stroke deficit when he double-bogeyed the par-4 16th hole. Hoge, who had two previous top-five finishes in his PGA Tour career, had 9-foot birdie putts on the two finishing holes but missed both, leaving him one stroke out of the playoff.

“I hit two good shots to give myself a chance at 17 and 18 but just didn’t get to the bottom,” Hoge said.

In the long playoff, both Hahn and Kizzire had chances to end it earlier but neither could make it happen. Hahn ultimately made the critical mistake when he missed the green on the par-3 17th hole to the right and failed to get up and down, seeing his par putt hook out of the hole. Kizzire tapped in his short par putt for his second win in four starts.

TMB“This is huge for me, huge for my confidence. One win doesn’t necessarily mean a whole lot, two means a little more,” Kizzire said.
